Denmark’s gambling sector experienced a notable 11.6% year-on-year increase in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for April 2025, with online casinos leading the charge. The industry’s shift to digital and mobile platforms continues to define its growth trajectory while land-based venues face ongoing challenges.
April 2025: Online Casinos Lead Revenue Growth
According to Denmark’s gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, the market reached DKK 665 million ($103 million) in GGR during April 2025. This marks a significant rise compared to DKK 596 million in April 2024 and DKK 635 million in March 2025.
Online Casino Performance
Online casinos spearheaded the growth, generating DKK 331 million—a 21.4% year-on-year rise and the highest monthly total since December 2024. Among online casino games:
- Slots: Accounted for 78.9% of total online casino revenue.
- Blackjack: Contributed 6.6%.
- Roulette: Added 6.4%.
Other online gaming verticals, including poker and bingo, made up the remaining revenue share. The shift demonstrates a widespread preference for digital gaming channels, with over 67% of all wagers in Denmark being placed via smartphones.
Sports Betting: Mobile-First Growth
Sports betting also gained momentum, reporting a 6.1% increase in revenue to DKK 207 million in April. Mobile platforms dominated the space, with 70.8% of all bets placed via smartphones, compared to 15% on desktops and 14.2% in retail betting shops.
Challenges for Land-Based Gambling
In contrast to digital success, land-based gambling struggled:
- Casino Revenue: Declined 2.5% year-on-year, reaching DKK 31 million.
- Slot Machines: Reported a 3.6% drop in revenue, generating DKK 93 million.
- Slot Halls: Contributed 79.7% of land-based slot revenue, with restaurant-based machines making up the remainder.
Bingo halls added DKK 3 million to the total, but comparable year-on-year data was unavailable.
Regulatory Measures Bolster Legal Channels
This rise in digital gambling activity coincides with regulatory efforts. In June 2025, Denmark’s Spillemyndigheden secured a court order to block 178 illegal gambling websites—the largest enforcement action since 2012. This initiative aims to channel players toward licensed, tax-compliant platforms, encouraging sustainable growth in the industry.
Conclusion: A Digital-Driven Future

The April 2025 gambling revenue data underlines a digital-first transformation in Denmark’s gambling market. Online casinos, particularly slots, are driving record-breaking growth, while mobile sports betting secures its position as a dominant channel. As land-based gambling continues to decline, regulatory actions further support the regulated industry’s expansion, setting Denmark’s gambling sector on a clear path toward digital dominance.
