India is grappling with an unprecedented rise in offshore betting advertisements, as recent data reveals a doubling of violations compared to the previous year. With these advertisements now dominating regulatory violation charts, authorities face mounting challenges in controlling illegal gambling promotions within the country.

Sharp Rise in Offshore Betting Ad Violations

According to the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), over 7,000 advertisements were reviewed in the financial year 2024–25. Of these, more than 3,000 ads—representing 43.5%—were flagged for promoting offshore betting platforms. This figure showcases a startling 130% increase from the 1,311 cases reported the previous year.

This escalation places offshore betting ads at the top of India’s advertising violation list, surpassing traditional offenders across industries. The breakdown of ad violations by sector further underscores the growing menace:

  • Offshore Betting: 43.5% (over 3,000 ads flagged)
  • Real Estate: 24.9%
  • Personal Care: 5.7%
  • Healthcare: 5.23%
  • Food and Beverage: 4.69%

Influencer Marketing’s Role

The rise of social media influencer marketing has significantly contributed to the problem. Of the 3,081 flagged offshore betting ads, 318 were linked directly to influencers. Many influencers fail to disclose paid partnerships, making it challenging for regulators to monitor and act effectively. Social media platforms such as LinkedIn remain hotspots for these unauthorized campaigns.

Regulatory Measures Intensify

In response to the growing offenses, ASCI and industry stakeholders have enhanced surveillance mechanisms, forming a dedicated unit in January 2025 to identify and report violations. This strategic initiative has improved compliance enforcement, with 98% of scrutinized ads requiring modifications or removal.

ASCI has ramped up collaborations with government bodies, forwarding cases related to illegal gambling, forex scams, alcohol promotions, and magic remedies for legal action. Notably, consumer complaints about advertising violations surged by 83%, reflecting increased public awareness of unethical practices.

The Digital Dilemma

Despite regulatory bans by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the anonymity and reach of digital media continue to fuel the offshore betting industry’s growth. Social media platforms offer tremendous engagement opportunities for illegal operators, posing a constant challenge to regulators.

ASCI has issued specific advisories targeting influencer marketing practices to tighten compliance, but enforcement efforts remain complex. The sheer proliferation of digital campaigns makes policing an exhaustive endeavor, with violations finding new ways to bypass restrictions.

The surge in offshore betting advertisements highlights a troubling regulatory gap in India’s advertising ecosystem. As violations skyrocket year-on-year in 2024–25, accounting for nearly half of all advertising offenses, authorities must adopt a multipronged approach. Strengthened monitoring, increased awareness, and intensified collaborations between tech platforms and regulators will be vital to mitigating this challenge. Until concrete changes occur, illegal operators will continue exploiting digital anonymity, raising the stakes for government intervention.
